Frequently Ask Questions

FAQs

1. What are dental implants?

Dental implants are used to attach artificial replacement teeth firmly to the bone. Implants can support a single crown, which replaces a lost tooth, or they can serve as anchors for fixed bridges which would replace several missing teeth. Implants can also act as anchors for a removable partial or complete denture.

2. Is there more than one type of dental implant?

There are basically two types of implants: one type fits on top of the bone (subperiostial), the second type is placed in the bone (endosseous). The choice of which implant will be used depends upon the quality and quantity of available bone, as well as the type of prosthesis or denture which will be supported by the implant.

3. What is the history of dental implants?

Dental implants were used by the early Egyptians and the history of modern oral implantology dates back almost 50 years. Today, implants are recognized throughout the world as a safe dental procedure with a very high rate of success.

4. What are dental implants made of?

Implants are made of medically pure titanium, the same metal successfully used in hip implants.

5. Is there a difference between the different implant manufacturers?

There are numerous companies manufacturing dental implant devices. All of these companies must adhere to the highest manufacturing and medical standards in order to gain approval for their use in Canada. Because of this wide choice and his high standards, Dr. Bernstein selects only the best implants for use with his patients.

6. How can dental implants help me?

Because we are living longer, there is a need for some type of permanent dental replacement system that will improve our overall well-being. As we age and possibly require dentures and removable bridges, we run into some very obvious problems, because such devices are loose and unstable. Implants, on the other hand, can provide people with dental replacements that are both functional and esthetic. For most patients, implants will greatly improve their appearance, comfort, speech and ability to chew and enjoy food.

7. Am I a suitable candidate for dental implants?

Patients who are healthy enough to undergo normal dental procedures and who can also maintain good oral hygiene can have dental implants. Even if you are in your eighties and are healthy, implants can still be of great value to you and would greatly improve your lifestyle.

8. What are the procedures involved in implanting dental implants?

First, you are given a thorough examination in order for Dr. Bernstein to determine exactly what is required for your particular situation. At this time he will discuss your options with you and he will recommend a course of treatment.

As a general rule, your implant surgery will be done in two stages. The first stage involves the placement of the implants into the available jaw bone. This is most commonly done with just local anesthesia and patients are very comfortable throughout the procedure. Once this is accomplished, you are given plenty of time for your mouth to heal, you then become ready for the second and final stage of the implant procedure.

Stage two involves uncovering the screw access ends of the implants placed in stage one, so that they can be used for abutments or metal posts which will be placed into the implants. These abutments will be used to attach prosthetic teeth.

The entire process takes several visits over a period of three to six months. If you would like a more detailed explanation of the entire process, please click here.

9. How long must I wait before using my implants and how long will they last?

Once your implants have been completed (see question #8), you may immediately begin using them. They have now become a permanent part of your mouth and with proper care and good oral hygiene, will last you for many years. You will be given complete instructions on how to care for your implants and Dr. Bernstein will continue to monitor their use through follow-up exams.

10. What is the cost?

The cost of the entire procedure varies according to the plan of treatment. After your initial examination, Dr. Bernstein will discuss what charges will apply in your particular case. It is possible that some parts of the procedures will be covered by insurance you may have and arrangements for payment can be made with Dr. Bernstein's staff. The overall cost will be very reasonable and you can be sure that your Total Dental Care will be the safest and most professional you can obtain anywhere.
